How to use the lorem ipsum generator

  1. Choose how much text you need: a number of paragraphs, sentences, words or list items.
  2. Keep “Start with Lorem ipsum…” on for the familiar opening, or switch it off for text that starts anywhere.
  3. Switch on HTML tags to get paragraphs wrapped in <p> tags or a <ul> list, ready to paste into code.
  4. Press Copy, or download the text. Press New text (or G) for a fresh version.

What lorem ipsum is

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text: words that look like real writing but say nothing, so people judging a design look at the layout rather than reading the copy. It comes from a passage of De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the ends of good and evil”), written by the Roman philosopher Cicero in 45 BC. The words were cut, shuffled and partly made up, so it is not proper Latin: “lorem” is the end of “dolorem”, meaning pain.

It is often said to have been used by printers since the 1500s, but the earliest clear examples are from the 20th century. Letraset’s rub-on lettering sheets made it common in the 1960s, and desktop publishing software made it everywhere from the 1980s. It is free to use for any purpose.

Tips for using placeholder text

  • Match the real length. If headlines will be six words, test with six words, not two. Real content that is longer than the placeholder is the most common reason layouts break.
  • Replace it before launch. Search your project for “lorem” before you publish; it is easy to miss a stray paragraph.
  • Use real text when it matters. For testing readability, translations or tone, placeholder text hides problems. Try a real draft and check it with the word counter.
  • Each paragraph here has 4 to 7 sentences of 6 to 16 words, close to the rhythm of ordinary prose, with the occasional comma and question.

Questions and answers

What does lorem ipsum mean?

Nothing, on purpose. It is scrambled Latin from Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum”. The original sentence talks about nobody loving pain for its own sake, but the shuffled version is not meaningful.

Can I use lorem ipsum in commercial projects?

Yes. Cicero’s text is more than two thousand years old and in the public domain, and the text generated here is free to use for anything.

Can I get it with HTML tags?

Yes. Switch on “HTML tags” to get paragraphs in <p> tags, or choose List items to get a <ul> list. Copy and Download then give you the HTML.

How many words are in a paragraph?

Here, about 40 to 110 words: 4 to 7 sentences of 6 to 16 words. The counter above the text shows the exact number of words and characters.

Is the text different every time?

Yes. Every press of New text, and every change of settings, makes a new random arrangement. Your last settings are remembered in this browser.

Why not just use real text?

Early in a design, placeholder text keeps attention on the layout and avoids debating the copy too soon. Once the design settles, switch to real content: it shows problems placeholder text hides.
