What counts as a character
- Letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation and line breaks count 1 each.
- A link counts as 23 characters, because X shortens every URL with its t.co service.
- Each emoji counts as 2, and so does each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character, so a post in those languages fits about half as many characters.
- Mentions (@name) count as typed. Images, videos and polls do not use any characters.
Best length vs the maximum
- Most posts that get read are far shorter than 280: one clear sentence plus a link or image.
- Only the first few lines show on long Premium posts before “Show more”, so put the point first.
- For more than 280 characters on a free account, write a thread: number the posts so readers know there is more.
