How many words a minute do people speak?

Most speeches and presentations run at 130 to 150 words a minute. Conversation is often faster, and slowing down slightly for an audience is usually wise.

These are common ranges rather than precise measurements; individual speakers vary a lot, and everyone speeds up when nervous.

Find your own pace

  1. Take a page of your script and count its words with the word counter.
  2. Read it aloud at the pace you would use on stage, with a timer.
  3. Divide the words by the minutes. Use that number, not an average, to plan your talk.
