An Instagram caption can be up to 2,200 characters, but in the feed only about the first 125 show before the caption is cut with “… more”. Hashtags, mentions and emoji all count toward the limit.

What counts as a character
- Every character counts, including spaces, line breaks, hashtags and @mentions.
- Emoji count as one character as you see them.
- Links in captions are not clickable, though they still count.
Best length vs the maximum
- Put the hook or the main point in the first line, before the cut.
- Long captions work for stories and tutorials; break them into short paragraphs with line breaks.
- Use a few relevant hashtags: since December 2025 Instagram has been rolling out a cap of 5 hashtags per post, down from 30.
