How to read these limits
- Hard limits are enforced: the platform will not let you post more. Soft limits are display cut-offs or recommendations, such as how much of a title Google shows; going over is allowed but costs you.
- Characters are counted as you see them unless a page says otherwise: an emoji or an accented letter is one. Some platforms count differently, and each page explains how: X counts links as 23 and emoji as 2, text messages switch to a smaller alphabet with one emoji, and a few fields count bytes.
- Spaces, punctuation and line breaks count everywhere.
- Limits change. Platforms adjust them, often with little notice, and paid plans sometimes allow more. Each page says when it was last reviewed; for anything that really matters, check the platform’s own help pages.
Checking several platforms at once
The character counter shows your text against the main platforms side by side, with a meter for each, plus your own custom limit. For words rather than characters, see the word count guides.
