How long is a statement of purpose?
A statement of purpose is usually 500 to 1,000 words, or one to two single-spaced pages, unless the program sets its own limit. Many ask for “up to two pages” or a word count in that range.

Follow the program first
Graduate programs set their own limits, in words, characters or pages. If a program says two pages, check whether it also specifies the font, size and spacing: a 1,000-word statement fills about 2 single-spaced pages in Arial 12 but 1.8 in Times New Roman.
What a statement of purpose covers
- The question or field you want to work in, and why.
- What prepared you: research, courses, work, with specifics.
- Why this program: faculty, labs, resources that fit your aims.
- What you want to do afterwards.
Questions and answers
How long should a statement of purpose be?
500 to 1,000 words is typical; follow the program’s limit if it gives one.
Is a statement of purpose the same as a personal statement?
Not quite. A statement of purpose focuses on your academic and research plans; a personal statement on your background and motivation. Some programs ask for both.
