The three questions

For courses starting in 2026 and later, UCAS replaced the free-form statement with three questions, answered in one statement with a shared 4,000-character limit:

  1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?
  2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
  3. What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Each answer must be at least 350 characters. You decide how to share the rest; many applicants give the first question the most room. Check UCAS’s current guidance for your year of entry.

Characters, not words

The limit is in characters, and spaces count. Long words and lots of punctuation use it up faster, which is why the same 4,000 characters can be 600 words or 700. Write in a word processor or the character counter with your own limit set to 4,000, and paste into UCAS only when you are under it.

Questions and answers

How many words is 4,000 characters?

About 615 to 727 words of English, depending on word length.

Do spaces count in the UCAS personal statement?

Yes, the 4,000 characters include spaces.

How should I split 4,000 characters between the three answers?

UCAS sets no rule beyond the 350-character minimum for each. A balanced statement often gives roughly 1,300 to 1,500 characters to each of the first two questions and the rest to the third.
