How long should a title tag be?

Keep title tags under about 60 characters. Google has no character limit, but it cuts titles that are wider than the results column (roughly 600 pixels on a computer), which usually happens around 50 to 60 characters.

What counts as a character

  • Google measures pixel width, so wide letters (W, M) run out sooner than narrow ones (i, l, t).
  • Capital letters are wider than lower case, so a title in Title Case fits fewer characters than one in sentence case.
  • Google may rewrite a title it thinks does not describe the page, whatever its length.

Best length vs the maximum

  • Put the main search phrase at the start; the end is what gets cut.
  • Write a title for each page that is different from every other page on the site.
  • Add your brand at the end if there is room: “… | KeenText”.

Questions and answers

What is the maximum length of a title tag?

There is no maximum; Google shows what fits in the width of the result, usually 50 to 60 characters.

Does a long title hurt rankings?

Not directly, but a cut-off title is less clear to the person deciding whether to click.

How long should a meta description be?

Up to about 155 to 160 characters. See meta description length.
